Adonis
HEIGHT: 14.2hh
SEX: Gelding.
DATE OF BIRTH: 30-01-2000.
BREED: Boerperd x Arabian.
COLOUR: Dapple grey.
MARKINGS: Adonis has a very unusual dark grey mark on his face between his eyes, which almost looks like a heart from a distance. His tail is black at the base going to dark grey, grey and then white at the bottom. His mane is all dark grey. His 2 front legs are black with a small band of white just above the hoof on both feet. His 2 back legs and hindquarters are dark grey also with 2 white socks and a pale grey patch just below his back right knee.
WHY IS HE CALLED ADONIS? Adonis is used to describe any handsome young man and means ‘my lord’ in Greek. In Greek mythology, he was the handsome youth loved by both Aphrodite and Persephon. Adonis was killed in a hunting accident and Aphrodite pleaded with Zeus to bring him back so Zeus decided to grant her request on the condition that he would spend autumn and winter in the underworld with Persephon and spring and summer with Aphrodite (thus making the vegetation die in winter and blossom in summer.) When Adonis died, he was in Aphrodite’s arms, when he died, she sprinkled his blood with nectar and the short lived anemone plant grew (anemone is taken from the name of the wind that so easily makes it fall.) He suits Adonis because of his amazing good looks.

WHY IS HE CALLED BABY? We have a Roman and Greek theme for the names of all our equines! But baby just suited baby so it stuck. I just call him baby boy- he seems to like it. I’m not sure how it will go down when he is all grown up though

*22-1-2008 Chara and Kosmos were put in the paddock next to Tequila and Icarus and they squeezed through the fence as they obviously wanted to say hello properly and seem to be getting on really well.
*18-12-2007 Venus and Baby were put with another 3 horses while we were away for a couple of days (these 3 have since left the property). Venus was at the bottom of the pecking order and was attacked frequently so as soon as we returned they were put with the donkeys for a quiet life. When they were in with the 3 horses Baby tragically got kicked in the head and was blinded in his right eye and he was also bitten and had a wound on his rump but after a huge amount of TLC and huge vets bills he is recovering well and his back is almost completely healed. He is still very nervous on his blind side so I just make sure I talk to him all the time so he knows where I am and doesn’t get a fright.

WHY IS SHE CALLED ECHO? Echo was a mountain nymph who loved the sound of her own voice. She used her voice to deceive Hera who then took away her free speech and made so she could only repeat the shouted words of others. Echo fell in love with a vain youth called narcissus. He was out walking in the woods one day and Echo could not address him, she had to wait for him to speak first. After a brief conversation Echo ran to be embraced by Narcissus but he pushed her away, she was heart broken and spent the rest of her life in lonely glens pining away for the love she never knew. Echo is a loner who enjoys talking to me, especially when I bring her food.

Icarus
NAME: Icarus

COLOUR: Dun with chocolate brown mane and tail.
MARKINGS: White blaze on face. 3 White socks.
WHAT DOES ICARUS MEAN? We have a Roman and Greek theme for the names of all our equines! Icarus was a mischievous young boy in the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. Icarus literally means follower. Icarus was the son of Daedalus who were both imprisoned by king Minos into the labyrinth which Daedalus build to enclose the fierce minotaur on the island of Crete. Daedalus had a plan to attach wings to his son made of wax and feathers to fly off the island. His father warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sea as it would dampen the feathers and he would no longer be able to fly. He also warned him to not fly too close to the sun as it would melt the wax on the wings and he would plummet into the sea. Unfortunately Icarus didn’t listen to his father and flew too close to the sun and fell into the sea.

*21-1-2008 Tequila and Icarus were introduced to Zeus but they didn’t get along so they were separated again.
*22-1-2008 Chara and Kosmos were put in the paddock next to Tequila and Icarus and they squeezed through the fence as they obviously wanted to say hello properly and seem to be getting on really well. So my new plan is to introduce Venus and Baby into this new herd (so the 2 babies are together) and put our 4 new horses arriving on the 10th of February in with Aramus and Achilles

COLOUR: Dark bay with a lighter muzzle and eye mask and darker brown mane and tail.
MARKINGS: Unusual curved stripe and whorl on his face and unusual leg markings (the front 2 have white stripes up the back from hoof to knee and a black sock on his back left leg).
WHAT DOES KOSMOS MEAN? We have a Roman and Greek theme for the names of all our equines! Kosmos means Beauty and order in Greek.

Mystic Europa (Misty)
NAME: Mystic Europa (Misty)

MARKINGS: She has beautiful spiderweb dapples down her back legs.
WHY IS SHE CALLED MYSTIC EUROPA? We have a Roman and Greek theme for the names of all our equines! Europa was a beautiful daughter of Agenor and Princess of Tyre. Zeus fell in love with her and stole her away by changing himself into a beautiful white bull, he had 3 sons with Europa and she was the first Queen of Crete.

Orion
NAME: Orion
HEIGHT: about 10hh Gelding
SEX: Gelding
DATE OF BIRTH: 22-11-2007.
BREED: Boerperd cross
COLOUR: Bright bay.
MARKINGS: He has 2 white socks on his back legs and one white sock on his front left leg. He has a whorl on his forehead where you can see his black skin underneath and above that he has a tiny cluster of white hairs.
WHAT DOES ORION MEAN? We have a Roman and Greek theme for the names of all our equines! In Greek mythology, Orion was a giant hunter, sone of the sea god Poseidon. He was killed by the goddess Artemis and turned into a constellation of stars. This constellation contains the great nebular and over 200 stars visible to the naked eye.
BOUGHT FROM: a local farmer (the previous owner of venus, baby, aramus and achilles). He is baby’s half brother (they have the same father)

EXTRA NOTES:
*Orions feet and teeth are in bad condition due to lack of minerals and vitamins and also lack of milk from his mother as his mother was sold when he was very young.
*Orion was left alone in a camp for I don’t know how long and subsequently wasn’t quite sure how to interact with the other equines when he arrived but now plays with the other horses and is enjoying being part of a herd again.
*Orion was incredibly nervous of people but from the first time I met him we bonded and he seems to trust me more than anyone else.
*When Orion arrived, he was covered in burrs (sharp barbed seeds) from plants in his camp, all of his hair was matted very badly and his tail was solid like a plank of woods as there were so many of them clumped in it. I managed to remove all of these within the first couple of hours of him being here and he stood, he seemed to know I was helping him. He loved to be scratched where I had just pulled a clump out so it was obviously very irritating on his skin. He was also covered in ticks under his belly which I also removed straight away.
*Orion was very neglected when he arrived and his gums were very pale and his stomach was swollen indicating lots of internal worms so he was de-wormed also the day he arrive

HEIGHT: 14.3hh

DATE OF BIRTH: 30-01-2001.
BREED: Boerperd x Arabian.
COLOUR: Flea bitten grey.
MARKINGS: Pegasus has a darker grey mane and tail and a scar across his nose, probably from a badly fitting halter in the past. He has dapple grey hock and knee joints and a small patch of pink skin on his nose around his left nostril.
WHY IS HE CALLED PEGASUS? Pegaus in Greek mythology was the immortal winged horse that sprang from the blood of slain medusa. Was tamed by Bellerophon with the help of a bridle given to him by Athena. He is the symbol of high flying imagination. Pegasus went to Mount Olympus and brought thunder and lightening to the god of gods, Zeus. He then flew into space and became the constellation in the northern sky that is still called Pegasus to this day. Pegasus also means strong. Pegasus suits his name bacause of his colour - the tiny spots look like stars in the night sky. Also he runs like the wind and when he runs his tail goes up and he looks like he is flying.

*22-1-2008 Chara and Kosmos were put in the paddock next to Tequila and Icarus and they squeezed through the fence as they obviously wanted to say hello properly and seem to be getting on really well.
*18-12-2007 Venus and Baby were put with another 3 horses while we were away for a couple of days (these 3 have since left the property). Venus was at the bottom of the pecking order and was attacked frequently so as soon as we returned they were put with the donkeys for a quiet life. When they were in with the 3 horses Baby tragically got kicked in the head and was blinded in his right eye and he was also bitten and had a wound on his rump but after a huge amount of TLC and huge vets bills he is recovering well and his back is almost completely healed. He is still very nervous on his blind side so I just make sure I talk to him all the time so he knows where I am and doesn’t get a fright.
